AHI Organizes Capacity-development Meeting for Community Leaders

Considering the enormous needs of the young people in AHI's target communities and our limitation in meeting all these needs effectively, it is imperative for us to strengthen the capacity of other community groups to contribute towards meeting the development needs of the young people in their communities. This was the goal of the recent two-day sensitization and capacity-building programme held for community leaders and youth volunteer groups at AHI.

The meeting commenced with an overview of AHI's activities, during which the participants became acquainted with AHI's vision and mission, and our activities, accomplishments and challenges since founding.

Following this introduction, the participants took turns to air their views on giving young people access to comprehensive information about sexuality and growing up.

The participants resolved to mobilize their communities to become more involved in raising awareness about the challenges young people face, and to support public and private initiatives aimed at improving their holistic development. As part of their resolution, they will organize periodic sensitisation programmes, through which other members of the community will become aware of the importance of providing young people accurate information about sexuality and growing up.

The meeting also presented an opportunity for community members who had been individually involved with AHI in the past to share their experience with the group. Many of them reported better communication with their children on sexuality-related matters. Some fathers even cited examples of how they had talked to their daughters about menstruation, which in the past would have been left to mothers, if at all discussed.
