| In furtherance
of her quest to address adolescent sexual and reproductive
health issues as well as develop life skills necessary
to ensure the optimal development of young people into
responsible adults, AHI, on August 7-11, 2006 conducted
Peer Educators’ Training for in-school adolescents
from Secondary schools around Lagos State.
The training which was in two batches (morning and
afternoon) aimed at increasing the access to Reproductive
Health and Sexuality Education among in-school adolescents
using the peer health educators as focal persons and
as role models for promoting responsible behaviour among
their peers.
This year’s edition held at the AHI Multi-Purpose
Hall, covered major issues and topics in Adolescent
Sexual and Reproductive Health such as Anatomy and Physiology
of the Human Reproductive system; Pubertal changes and
how to cope; Menstruation and menstrual hygiene; Teenage
Pregnancy and Pregnancy options; STIs/HIV/AIDS; Abstinence
and Safer Sexual skills; Drug Abuse; Body image and
Self Esteem; Goal Setting and Decision Making; Friendship,
Love and Dating; Assertiveness and Negotiation skills;
Sexual and Reproductive Health Rights; Values and Values
clarification etc.
More than Seventy- four (74) students selected from
twenty-eight (28) Secondary schools in Somolu, Kosofe
and Mainland Local Education District took part in the
training.
Furthermore, various methodologies such as group assignments,
role-plays, story telling, anonymous questions and answers
were used for better comprehension of the participants.
At the end of the training, participants learned how
to deal with peer pressure, abstinence, self control,
public speaking, how to set goals and plan their lives
as well as about adolescent health and growing up.
