| The monthly
Clinic Health day was held on the 28th of August 2007
at the AHI Youth Friendly clinic. The programme was
designed to educate young people on issues relating
to health, growth and development. The theme of the
event was “Self Esteem” and a good number
of young people turned up for the celebration despite
the fact that they were on vacation.
Dr. Yinka Adeniran, the resident doctor for the month
facilitated the programme and spoke elaborately on
the definition of self esteem, factors that influence
and affect self esteem as well as how self esteem;
either positive or negative could influence decision
making, assertiveness, goal settings, gender roles
and other issues that basically concern young people.
According to him, the beliefs we have in ourselves
whether of being beautiful or ugly, tall or short,
dark or fair, etc. result in the level of our self
esteem and that people will not value a person more
than he/she values his/her self. Dr. Adeniran also
said that people who valued and esteemed themselves
high would have value for others and life in general.
The highlight of the day was the questions and answers
session where young people asked various questions
ranging from how to improve one’s self esteem
without giving others an inferiority complex to how
to help their friends who weren’t present at
the occasion improve their self esteem.
All questions were duly and satisfactorily addressed
by the facilitator.
