| The Adolescent Reproductive Health education Course is one of the programmes designed by AHI to promote the sexual health of in-school adolescents. This course addresses issues of adolescent reproductive health as it relates to attitude, behaviour and values as well as the ability to make informed choices about their reproductive health. It seeks to educate adolescents about the life skills they need in order to make responsible decisions about their sexuality as well as the development of skills to cope with the challenges of growing up. It also seeks to equip young people with knowledge and skills in peer education so that they can educate their peers on.
The first batch of the training was held from February 19 to March 27, 2008 for a duration six (6) weeks. Training days were Tuesdays and Thursdays only.
Topics discussed during the training include anatomy and physiology of the male and female reproductive systems, menstruation, breast and testicular self-examination, STIs, HIV and AIDS, abstinence, values clarification, communication, facilitation techniques, goals of Health and Life Planning Club (HLPC), roles of health educators, etc. Facilitation techniques used include lectures, talk, discussion, brainstorming, group assignment, role play, and story telling.
A special feature of the programme was the 'egg baby exercise' which was aimed at helping young people understand the implication and demands of teenage pregnancy.
Thirty-two (32) young people graduated from the first batch of the training and they were awarded certificates.
