The Comet Newspaper
June 20, 2004
For the sake
of present and future generations, there is need for
Nigerians to have a commitment to the preservation and
enhancement of the environment.
As the world commemorates World Environment
Day, with the theme "Wanted! Seas and Oceans, Dead
or Alive", Action Health Incorporated (AHl) joined
in the commemoration with the sub-theme, "Water
pollution; a threat to life" The Nigerian marine-environment
is being de- graded by pollution from oil, solid waste
and sewage.
Over-exploitation of living resources
is leading to decreasing fish lands while coastal erosion
and flooding are causing widespread loss of coastal
habitat.
There is need involve young ones in
the art of preserving the environment. The programme
attracted over 100 students from -15 secondary schools
in Lagos; One of the facilitators, Mrs. Tayo Amodu,
Programme Assistant, (Information / Education and Communication)
AHI, in her presentation, explained the components of
water cycle and water pollution. The major sources of
water pollution according to her, include; municipal,
industrial and agriculture as well as its implication,
which could be economic, social or health.
She encouraged the youth to as to
how they want to treat the earth, water, seas and oceans,
a decision which must involved everyone. Water pollution
is more than just having dirty water in the gutter;
it also has serious health implications.. This however
calls for the need to educate peer educators and the
society at large to effect positive' changes. Mrs. Amodu
also spoke about the various types of water treatment
and encouraged young people to join in the campaign
against water pollution. The session, which followed,
was on various presentations made by various schools
to commemorate the event.
At the end of the programme, pupils
were better informed on how best to take care of the
environment, thereby guarding against environmental
pollution.
