A Guide to Setting
Up Health and Life Planning Clubs in Schools
Learning is better achieved when it is done in a
fun and relaxed atmosphere. AHI established Health
and Life Planning Clubs in secondary schools in
which it works to provide in-school young people
an avenue to come together to learn about their
sexuality. A Guide to Setting Up Health and Life
Planning Clubs in Schools was written to help interested
organizations and persons set up similar clubs in
schools. It is a step-by-step guide to setting up
the club, from determining its goals, identifying
and training partners, teachers and students who
will run the club, to determining strategies for
monitoring its effectiveness. The guide also suggests
different club activities that can be done at club
meetings/events. |

Providing Youth-Friendly
Health Services: The AHI Youth Clinic
Traditionally, health services have not been specifically
designed to meet the needs of young people. Young
people are also reluctant to seek the services of
traditional health clinics because they fear being
misunderstood and judged. It was in recognition
of this gap that AHI established its youth-friendly
health clinic where adolescents can come to receive
sexual and reproductive health services in a safe,
non-judgmental environment. This monograph documents
our experience with this initiative. |

Building Alliances for
Sexuality Education: The Community Advocacy Project
A government ban on AHI's activities in Lagos State
public schools in 1992 due to a publication in the
print media taught us an important lesson the hard
way: the importance of advocacy. We quickly realized
the necessity to garner support and build alliances
for the promotion of sexuality education. Building
Alliances for Sexuality Education: The Community
Advocacy Project documents AHI's advocacy programme.
It provides summaries of our advocacy activities
with policy makers/government officials, school
administrators, parents and the community in which
we work. It also documents the strategies that we
use and sheds light on those that work and those
that do not. |
