Family Life and Emerging Health Issues Quality Assurance Tools for Colleges of Education in Nigeria
This publication is aimed at lecturers of colleges of education in the implementation of the Family Life and Emerging Health Issues (FHLEI) curriculum introduced by the National Commission for Colleges of Education, in response to the national call for preparing the teacher educators, teacher training institutions, education policy makers and practitioners to fight the HIV and AIDS pandemic. The Quality Assurance Tools respond to the challenge of preparing teachers who are better equipped with the knowledge and skills to teach FLHE curriculum at the basic education level more effectively.

Family Life and Emerging Health Issues Curriculum Implementation: Strategic Framework 2011-2015
In response to reducing the HIV infections and mitigating the impact of AIDS as well as other emerging health issues the NCCE in 2009 introduced the Family Life and Emerging Health Issues (FLEHI), a General Studies course in all NCE awarding institutions in Nigeria. The Strategic Framework of Implementation provides a response that encapsulates directions and strategic actions that will fast track the accomplishment of the goal and objectives of the FLEHI curriculum. It also serves as a guide for monitoring the level and quality of implementation of FLEHI.

Family Life and Emerging Health Issues Curriculum is designed to promote the acquisition of factual information, formation of positive attitudes and values as well as develop skills to cope with biological, psychological, socio-cultural and spiritual development as human beings. It is intended to build the confidence of the student teachers in imparting knowledge of Family Life and HIV/AIDS Education concepts at the basic school levels. FLEHI will allow the student teachers to have foundational and content competencies as well as skills and leadership in equipping learners towards attaining a healthy future.

Family Life and HIV Education for Junior Secondary Schools Students' Handbook   Family Life and HIV Education for Junior Secondary Schools Students' Handbook
Family Life and HIV Education Students' Handbook is developed for use by student at the Junior secondary School level as a supplementary text with factual information on the Family Life and HIV Education (FLHE) Curriculum. It is organized around the five key concept in the approved FLHE curriculum to help young   people learn about their bodies, physical and emotional changes that occur during adolescence; presenting how young people can acquire skills including steps to take in setting sexual limit and ways of refusing unwanted sexual advances; exposing young people to issues around HIV infection and prevention and encouraging young people to discuss relationships with family and friends, as well as addressing the social and cultural environments that influence the way they learn about and express their sexuality. Where appropriate, the handbook contains stories, illustrations, pictures and cartoon that will help the students understand the topics better.
     
  Family Life and HIV Education for Junior Secondary Schools Teachers' Guide
Family Life and HIV Education Teachers' Guide is a comprehensive, easy-to-understand guide for use by teachers in junior Secondary Schools who have the responsibility for classroom delivery f the Family Life and HIV Education (FLHE) Curriculum. This publication is not a textbook but rather a "how-to" guide for teachers. The guide encourages teachers to be creative, reflective and observant of the reaction and general demeanor of young people during classroom interaction, as well as creating an enabling environment for learning. Each chapter in the guide is divided into the following sections for effective delivery of the FLHE curriculum: lesson objectives, teaching aids, activities and evaluation questions. Teachers are encouraged to supplement with appropriate content-based textbooks, the FLHE curriculum and the Family Life and HIV Education Students' Handbook.
     
 

Programming for Adolescent Sexual and Reproductive Health in Northern Nigeria: Understanding Contexts and Challenges
This report examines various forms of sexual and reproductive health practices, their origins, and the services available in communities northern in Nigeria. It presents the findings of the Baseline Needs Assessment Survey undertaken prior to the implementation of an intervention programme on adolescent sexual and reproductive health in four northern states. It documents findings with regard to a range of sexual and reproductive health issues among adolescents, their parents, community and opinion leaders and other stakeholders who were interviewed during the baseline survey. This publication is an invaluable resource for practitioners, advocates, donors and other stakeholders interested in working providing reproductive health services for adolescents in northern Nigeria.

The main goal of Family Life and HIV Education Curriculum is the promotion of awareness and prevention against HIV/AIDS.   A Guide to Setting Up Health and Life Planning Clubs in Schools
Learning is better achieved when it is done in a fun and relaxed atmosphere. AHI established Health and Life Planning Clubs in secondary schools in which it works to provide in-school young people an avenue to come together to learn about their sexuality. A Guide to Setting Up Health and Life Planning Clubs in Schools was written to help interested organizations and persons set up similar clubs in schools. It is a step-by-step guide to setting up the club, from determining its goals, identifying and training partners, teachers and students who will run the club, to determining strategies for monitoring its effectiveness. The guide also suggests different club activities that can be done at club meetings/events.

This manual provides a step-by-step guide to teaching sexuality education. It provides instructional material for teaching topics under the six key concepts of comprehensive sexuality education (i.e. relationships, human development, personal skills, sexual behavior, sexual health and sexuality, society and culture). Educators and other sexuality professionals will find this manual a complete resource in teaching young people about sexuality.
     
  Guidelines for Comprehensive Sexuality Education in Nigeria
The Guidelines for Comprehensive Sexuality Education in Nigeria is a framework to promote and facilitate the development of sexuality education programmes nationwide. It presents a comprehensive approach to sexuality education and encompasses the key components of a broad definition of sexuality. The guidelines provide a starting point to facilitate the development of sexuality education curricula, textbooks and programmes, as well as to evaluate existing programmes. The guidelines can also be used in teacher preparation or in-service training; and classroom teachers may use them to provide a theoretical basis for daily programmes.

  Providing Youth-Friendly Health Services: The AHI Youth Clinic
Traditionally, health services have not been specifically designed to meet the needs of young people. Young people are also reluctant to seek the services of traditional health clinics because they fear being misunderstood and judged. It was in recognition of this gap that AHI established its youth-friendly health clinic where adolescents can come to receive sexual and reproductive health services in a safe, non-judgmental environment. This monograph documents our experience with this initiative.
     
  Building Alliances for Sexuality Education: The Community Advocacy Project
A government ban on AHI's activities in Lagos State public schools in 1992 due to a publication in the print media taught us an important lesson the hard way: the importance of advocacy. We quickly realized the necessity to garner support and build alliances for the promotion of sexuality education. Building Alliances for Sexuality Education: The Community Advocacy Project documents AHI's advocacy programme. It provides summaries of our advocacy activities with policy makers/government officials, school administrators, parents and the community in which we work. It also documents the strategies that we use and sheds light on those that work and those that do not.
     
  A Unique Partnership For Adolescents Well-being In Nigeria
This publication highlights events that led to the convening of the landmark National Conference on Adolescent Reproductive Health in Nigeria in 1999. It details every stage of the conference planning and convening, including identifying key partners, getting donor support, determining activities and publicity for the conference. It also details the challenges that were faced in the course of planning the conference as well as the lessons that were learned.

  Can We Really Talk About It?
This self-help guide aims at assisting parents to develop communication skills that would enhance a positive relationship with their teenage children. It provides them with the necessary information and skills to promote open and honest discussion of sexual and reproductive health issues with their adolescents. The guide was developed in collaboration with the United Nation Population Fund (UNFPA).
