It explores the subject of early marriage in two specific communities of Bauchi and Borno states. The findings show the following: Marriage to older husbands, low educational attainment, low social status, limited access to health services, increased risk of maternal and infant mortality, increased vulnerability to STI/HIV etc. It also provides personal attributes and those of close relations of women who married as adolescents but have been able to continue their education in their matrimonial homes. |

The
State of Married Adolescents in Northern Nigeria
The 26-page working paper sheds light
on the characteristics of married adolescents
in Northern Nigeria. It points out the problems
associated with adolescent marriage such as being
likely to be in polygamous marriages; lack of
access to information especially reproductive
health information; deprivation of the opportunity
of schooling; increased rate of the country’s
high maternal and infant mortality as well as
denying adolescent girls good health. Recommendations
that would alleviate some of the problems faced
by married adolescents are also suggested in this
publication.

Time for Action
In response to the urgent need to articulate specific
strategies to address the reproductive health needs
of Nigerian adolescents, the National Conference
on Adolescent Reproductive Health was held in Abuja,
Nigeria in January 1999. For the first time in Nigeria,
a conference worked towards developing a strategic
framework for action on adolescent health, with
active participation of all key stakeholders, including
young people. Time for Action is the report of this
landmark meeting. This summary of the conference
proceedings serves as an important information source
for programme planners and implementers, and motivates
us to seek innovative ways of meeting young people's
needs in relation to their sexual and reproductive
health and rights, and their impact on national
development. |

collaborative efforts among organisations working
at the community level to assist young people and
their families in building the personal and social
assets needed for healthy and productive adulthood.
